A customer brought a few boards by the shop. He said the guy he got them from brought them up from South America about 15 years ago, and they've just been sitting in his shed since. He was told they're "rosewood", which is not only vague, but I believe, incorrect. They're definitely two different species. The reddish boards have lighter-colored pores, which I've seen in macacauba and ipe. The dark brown stuff has huge open pores. Both are fairly dense and heavy, with no discernible smell. Any thoughts as to what they might be? He wants me to buy them, but right now I'm not real enthusiastic.

Third looks a lot like Jatoba too.

3rd appears to be ipe to me. The others?.

Ken, the dark one is definitely panama rosewood, aka Nicaragua rosewood. The lighter one is some type of Granadillo, a platymicium species.

Thanks for the input, folks. I was thinking the pinkish-orangey one might be ipe, but if Aaron says Granadillo, then it's Granadillo! I've only built one Granadillo guitar, but I do remember how fragrant and spicy the wood was. These boards don't seem to have that same fragrance, though I'm sure there are some varieties that lack the characteristic scent.

I'm also not convinced the board in the second pic is the same as the skinny board in the third.

Although they were "brought up" from South America, could they have been imported? The third photograph is just like a piece of Bubinga I have, unless of course, my Bubinga is not Bubinga.
